How to unsend your Instagram DMs, and why theirs stay

On Instagram, deleting a chat only clears it from your own inbox. Unsending is what removes a message from the chat for everyone, and that is what Unpost does, one message at a time, with the messages you sent.

Open the Instagram account on the Dms tab
The account opens on the Dms tab, where your chats are listed. The Content tab next to it, selected in the picture, is for posts, reels, carousels, likes, comments, the accounts you follow and your followers.

Tick the chats to clean
Pick single chats, or Select all. Group chats are listed too, and your messages are unsent for everyone in the group. In each chat Unpost unsends the messages you sent, one by one, and skips everyone else’s; theirs still appear in the run’s list, unmarked, because they are read but not touched. A message Instagram refuses is left as it is, also unmarked, and ten refusals in a row stop the run.

Limit it to a date range if you want
On the next screen, turn off Delete all Messages; the calendar opens, and you pick a start and an end date. Pick both: if you close the calendar with one missing, the switch goes back to deleting everything. On Instagram the range applies to posts, reels, carousels and DMs.

Keep Instagram closed while it runs
The banner at the top of the list says it: avoid opening or using Instagram while deletion is in progress, and if you get rate limited, wait a couple of hours before trying again.

- Only your own messages can be unsent. Everyone else’s stay, and so do any screenshots they took.
- The chat itself stays in your inbox, with the other person’s messages in it. To take it out of your list, delete the chat in Instagram afterwards.
- On the free plan every unsent message counts toward the daily allowance, and the run stops when it is used up. Unpost works one message at a time, so a long chat takes a while.
- Unsending is permanent.
