How to delete old messages with a data package

Platforms stop listing older content, but your data export still has it. On Discord, X (Twitter) and Reddit, Delete from data package works from that export, which Unpost reads on your phone and never uploads.

Request your data export from the platform
Ask the platform for a copy of your data with every category selected, as the app reminds you: When exporting, you need to export all your data. When it is ready, download it to your phone. The How to export your data link under the option opens a guide with each platform’s export page.

Choose Delete from data package
Tap your account on Main. On the How should we delete? sheet, Delete from data package is the option marked Most complete.

Tap Select Package File and pick the export
The Import Data Package sheet opens. Tap Select Package File and pick the downloaded .zip as it is (on iPhone, its unzipped folder works too). If you imported one before, it is listed under Current Data Package: tap it to use it again and skip the import. Tap Select Package File only to replace it: that deletes it at once, even if you then cancel the file picker.

Keep Unpost open while it imports
The import starts as soon as the file is picked: the sheet reads Importing, with a progress bar, and has no close button. Keep the app open; the file is read on your phone and never uploaded. A large export takes a while and needs free space on the phone.

Tick what the export holds and run it as usual
When the import is done, the list opens by itself. On Discord, tick conversations on the Dms tab: they come from the export. On Reddit, open the Content tab: Delete Posts and Delete Comments there work from the export. On X, Delete Posts and Delete Replies do. Then tap Continue, set any options and tap Delete. Discord’s Servers tab and Reddit’s Dms tab show what the platform lists today, read live, so deleting there doesn’t use the export.

- If the sheet says Import stopped, nothing was changed on your account. It shows what went wrong and a Worth checking list: the export may still have been building when you downloaded it; pick the whole .zip, not a single file inside it; every category must have been selected when you requested it. Tap Choose another file to try again.
- On Android, the back button hides the Importing sheet, but the import carries on and the list still opens when it is done. If the import stops instead, you see Import stopped the next time you open Delete from data package.
- After a cancelled file pick or a stopped import, the sheet still lists the old package until you close and reopen it, but it was already deleted: on Discord the Dms tab then opens empty, and on Reddit and X the rows still show but a run finds nothing.
- Use the export of the account you added in Unpost. On Reddit, an export of another account stops the import with The selected data package belongs to a different account; Discord and X don’t check, so make sure you pick the right file.
- On X, likes aren’t imported, and the export doesn’t mark reposts and quotes as such: Delete Likes and Delete Reposts find nothing in this mode, and Delete Posts takes the export’s reposts and quotes as posts.
- An export is a snapshot: anything posted after you requested it isn’t in it. Removing the account from Unpost also removes its imported package.
