Does Blocking Someone on Instagram Delete Messages?
Reviewed by Unpost Team
No — blocking someone on Instagram does not delete your messages. Blocking hides the conversation from your inbox and stops new contact, but it erases nothing. The other person keeps the entire chat history on their side: every text, photo, voice note, and reaction you ever sent is still sitting in their inbox after you block them, fully readable.
The confusion is understandable. When you block someone, the thread disappears from your own inbox, and that feels like deletion. It is not deletion — it is hiding.
So if the real question behind your search is “how do I make those messages disappear from their side before I cut this person off”, blocking is the wrong tool. The only action that removes messages from their view is unsending your own messages, and the order matters: unsend first, then block. (For the rest of your account, see the guide to cleaning up your Instagram messages, posts and likes.)
What Exactly Blocking Changes for Your DMs
Blocking is an access control, not a deletion tool. It changes who can reach whom — not what was already said.
Your view. The conversation typically disappears from your inbox once you block. You can no longer open the thread, scroll the history, or send anything. The messages are hidden from you, not erased.
Their view. Nothing is removed. The full conversation stays in their inbox exactly as it was, and they can reopen it and reread everything whenever they want. What changes for them is contact: anything new they try to send will not reach you, and your profile becomes hard to find. Instagram does not display a “you have been blocked” banner on the old chat.
Group chats. Blocking does not clean up group conversations you share: the message history stays visible to everyone in the group, including what you posted there.
Block vs Delete Chat vs Unsend
| Action | Your side | Their side |
|---|---|---|
| Block | Hides the conversation from your inbox | Full chat history stays readable |
| Delete chat | Removes the thread from your inbox only | Full chat history stays readable |
| Unsend (your own messages) | Removes each message you sent | Removes the same messages from their view |
If You Want the Messages Gone From Their Side
There is only one real path: unsend the messages you sent — before you block.
Unsending removes a sent message from both sides of the conversation, including their inbox. It also has a strict limit: you can only unsend messages you wrote. Nothing on Instagram lets you erase what the other person wrote, and blocking does not change that.
To unsend a single message: open the conversation, press and hold your message, then tap Unsend. That works fine for one regrettable text.
It does not scale, though. If the thread covers months or years, manual unsend means opening the chat and repeating the same press-hold-tap loop hundreds of times. For the complete workflow, including how to bulk unsend your own sent messages in selected conversations, read how to delete Instagram messages from both sides.
Cleaning up before you block? Unpost is a mobile app for iOS and Android that bulk deletes your own sent Instagram messages in the conversations you pick, with an optional date range, and shows the progress while it runs. Free accounts get 50 deletions a day per account; Premium removes the cap.
The Right Order: Unsend First, Then Block
If you block first, you lock yourself out of the cleanup. The conversation is hidden from your inbox, so there is nothing left to press and hold — and the messages you wanted gone are still sitting in the other person’s inbox indefinitely. Your only fix at that point is to unblock, which restores contact, just to regain access for unsending.
Do it in this order instead:
- Open the conversation while you still have access. Scroll through and decide what needs to go: everything, a date range, or specific topics.
- Unsend your messages. One by one in Instagram if it is a handful, or in bulk if it is a real backlog: select the conversation, set a date range if needed, and keep the app open until the run ends.
- Check the thread. Confirm your side of the conversation is gone. Remember the limit: their messages stay, because they are not yours to remove.
- Then block. Now blocking does what you actually wanted: it cuts off contact, and there is nothing of yours left to read on their side.
The extra step costs a few minutes. Skipping it can leave your words readable on their side for years.
What Happens If You Unblock Them Later
Because blocking deletes nothing, unblocking restores access — not history that never left.
- The thread can reappear. The conversation was hidden, not erased, so after unblocking, the chat history is typically visible in your inbox again. Everything neither side unsent is still there, on both sides.
- Unsent messages stay gone. Unsending is permanent. Unblocking does not bring back anything that was unsent, on either side.
- New contact is possible again. The other person can message you once more. If you do not follow each other, their messages may land in your message requests rather than your main inbox. Blocking also removed the follow relationship in both directions; unblocking does not restore it.
