How to delete messages containing a keyword

Auf Englisch verfügbar

Delete by Keywords is the last section of the options screen you reach with Continue. Discord, Slack, LinkedIn, Facebook and TikTok have it; Instagram, X and Reddit don’t. With no keyword, everything you ticked is deleted; with keywords, only what contains one of them.

  1. 01

Type a word and tap +

Scroll to Delete by Keywords, type a word in the Type keyword here box, and tap the + next to it (or the keyboard’s Done key).

In der App Continue → Delete by Keywords

  2. 02

    Check your keywords

Each word becomes a chip under Active Keywords, with an × to remove it, and the line above changes to Only content containing these keywords will be deleted. Add as many as you need: something is deleted if it contains any one of them.

  3. 03

    Keep keywords short

A keyword matches anywhere in the text, whatever the capitals: invoice also finds Invoices and INVOICE-2023. A single distinctive word finds more than a whole sentence, which only matches where it appears word for word.

  4. 04

Add a date range for the tightest cleanup

The Delete all Messages section at the top of the same screen works together with keywords: only what is inside the range and contains a keyword is deleted. See How to delete only a date range.

Gut zu wissen

  • Keywords only match text. A message that is only a picture, a file or a voice note has no text, so it is skipped while keywords are set.
  • On Facebook, keywords match post and comment text only, and anything without text is skipped, as the note under the section says.
  • On TikTok, keywords apply to comments only, as the note under the section says: your videos, reposts and watch history ignore them.
  • Reactions have no text of their own, so they follow what they sit on: on LinkedIn a reaction is removed only when the post you reacted to contains a keyword; on Discord and Slack, when the message it sits on does.
